Welcome to University of Michigan Dearborn's website on urban farming. We have created this site to raise awareness about the practice of urban farming and promote its use throughout the urban areas of Michigan and across the country.
Urban farming is a style of agriculture where food is grown, processed, and
distributed in urban areas such as cities, towns, and
the like. Urban farms can
serve many different purposes: a community cause, a guaranteed fresh food source
for the city, and a place for people to get together and meet new friends who
share interests in farming.
Farming in urban areas offers many benefits. It can offer a source of employment for anyone in the city, and it can liven up the community as a general cause. It can also stimulate the local economy. Urban farming can also create a "local flavor" of food that is iconic to that city.
